Day-by-day plans and combination routes

Lower Zambezi safari itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 days, canoe trips and combinations (2026)

How many nights the Lower Zambezi needs, day-by-day plans for three and five nights, a canoe circuit, and routes that add South Luangwa, Mana Pools across the river or Victoria Falls. Built on Proflight's published shuttle times and 2026 lodge rates, with a rough cost for each.

Updated 23 October 2026

The short answer

Three nights is the minimum if you fly in from Lusaka, four is better, and five lets you split between a lodge in the Chiawa game management area and a camp inside the park. Canoeing needs its own time: the Tusk & Mane island circuit is sold as at least four nights. The classic seven-night trip adds South Luangwa, linked by a direct daily flight from Mfuwe to Jeki from 1 June to 31 October, or Mana Pools across the river via the Chirundu border. Victoria Falls connects through Lusaka on the same day. Plan everything inside 1 May to 15 November, when Proflight's shuttle flies and the camps are open.

How many days you need in the Lower Zambezi

Three nights is the working minimum for a fly-in stay. The Proflight shuttle from Lusaka is short, about 35 minutes to Jeki and 35 to 60 minutes to Royal, and the 07:20 departure from June to October lands you in time for lunch and an afternoon activity. Three nights gives you two full days: enough for a canoe trip, a boat cruise, a couple of game drives that turn into night drives and a walk.

Four nights is the better single-camp stay, for two practical reasons. Sausage Tree and Potato Bush add a free transfer flight from four nights, and Tusk & Mane sell their island canoe circuit as a minimum of four nights. Five nights is the length we would choose for a first visit, split between a lodge in the Chiawa game management area (GMA) and a camp inside the park, which are different experiences.

If you drive from Lusaka, add a night, because arrival and departure days are mostly road. Seven nights or more makes sense when you combine the valley with South Luangwa, Mana Pools or Victoria Falls, since getting to the Zambezi valley is the expensive part of the trip.

Rules that shape every Lower Zambezi day

  • Scheduled flights run 1 May to 15 November only. From 16 November to 30 April it is a charter or a boat, and most camps are closed.
  • Bags: 20 kg per person in soft bags, hand luggage and camera gear included. Proflight stores excess bags free at Lusaka airport.
  • Jeki airstrip serves the camps inside the park; Royal serves the GMA lodges. Your camp tells you which one and books the seat.
  • A park day is a calendar day, 06:00 to 18:00. Self-drivers pay $30 per person a day and must be out by 18:00; operators take you in for $25 and can run night drives to about 20:00.
  • Children under 12 are normally not allowed on canoe or walking safaris, and Tusk & Mane set 14.
  • Canoeing costs $20 per person a day in park fees on top of entry, and it is best in September on the lowest water.
  • There is no fuel in the GMA or the park. Fill up at Chirundu.

Three nights, fly-in: one lodge on the river

The simplest good trip. Fly from Lusaka in the morning, stay at one lodge, and use its boats, canoes and vehicles. In the GMA, Royal Zambezi Lodge sits beside Royal airstrip, so the transfer is minutes, and you pay park fees only on park days. Inside the park, Potato Bush Camp and Chiawa Camp are reached from Jeki and have the game on the doorstep.

  1. Day 1Proflight P0 620 leaves Lusaka at 07:20 and lands at Royal at 07:55 and Jeki at 08:20 (1 June to 31 October). Brunch, rest through the heat, afternoon boat cruise into sunset.
  2. Day 2Early canoe trip on a side channel, back for brunch, afternoon game drive into the park that becomes a night drive.
  3. Day 3Morning walk or full-day drive inside the park, afternoon on the water or fishing (catch-and-release).
  4. Day 4Dawn activity, then the shuttle back to Lusaka for an afternoon international connection.

Rough cost per person sharing, 2026: about $2,280 (May and December) to $3,165 (June to November) at Royal Zambezi Lodge, being three nights at $675 to $970 plus its $85 a day park package on each day. Inside the park, Potato Bush Camp comes to about $2,925 to $4,290 before its park fees, which it does not itemise, and Chiawa Camp to $4,890 to $6,345 including its $120 nightly fees. Add the Proflight return, a sample Lusaka to Jeki fare of about $483. Estimates from published rates.

Three nights by road from Lusaka: GMA base and day-trips

The budget trip that actually exists here, and a popular long weekend from Lusaka. You sleep in the GMA, where no park fee applies, and drive into the park on two of the three days. A 4x4 is required inside the park. Mvuu Lodge has campsites with private ablutions and tented chalets; Kiambi Safari Lodge and Gwabi River Lodge, nearer the Kafue confluence, have camping and rooms and are shorter drives. Kanyemba Lodge, about two and a half hours from Lusaka, is the shortest drive of all if you only have two nights. Our costs page has the line-by-line arithmetic.

  1. Day 1Lusaka to Chirundu on tar, about 120 km and 2.5 hours, up to 4 with border trucks. Fuel, cash and supplies, then over the Chiawa bridge and along the dirt track through the GMA. Allow most of the day: it is about 216 km and at least five hours from Lusaka to the park.
  2. Day 2Into the park through Chongwe Gate at 06:00 on a $30 self-drive permit plus $15 for the car. Drive the valley floor, out by 18:00.
  3. Day 3River day from camp: a boat cruise or a guided canoe trip booked with the lodge, no park fee if you stay in the GMA.
  4. Day 4A second park morning, or straight back to Lusaka.

Rough cost: about $210 per person for two people camping at Mvuu, based on our costs page: about $150 in camping (a 2020 figure), $120 in self-drive entry, $30 in vehicle fees and about $120 of diesel, divided by two. In Mvuu's tented chalets in high season it is about $1,775 per person. Estimates at 2026 rates, excluding vehicle hire, food and the lodge's levies.

Five nights, two camps: the GMA, then inside the park

The trip we would plan for a first visit. Two nights at a GMA lodge near the Chongwe give you the river, boats and an easy start; three nights inside the park give you the game on the doorstep and night drives without a gate. Fly into Royal and out of Jeki. The camps arrange the transfer between them by road or boat; neither publishes a time, so ask when you book.

  1. Day 1Proflight 07:20 from Lusaka to Royal, 35 minutes. Two nights at Time + Tide Chongwe Camp or Royal Zambezi Lodge. Afternoon boat cruise.
  2. Day 2Canoe trip in the morning, game drive into the park in the afternoon, back after dark.
  3. Day 3Transfer into the park. Three nights at Chiawa Camp or Old Mondoro in the west, or Lolebezi if the budget is tighter.
  4. Days 4 and 5Game drives, walks with an armed scout, a longer canoe trip and night drives inside the park.
  5. Day 6Dawn activity, then the shuttle from Jeki to Lusaka, about 35 minutes.

Rough cost per person sharing, 2026: about $6,710 to $8,525 for two nights at Chongwe Camp ($810 to $990, plus $100 on each park day) and three at Chiawa Camp ($1,510 to $1,995 plus $120 a night in fees). A value version with two nights at Royal Zambezi and three at Lolebezi, on Lolebezi's indicative $525 plus $85 levy, comes to about $3,350 to $3,940. Proflight fares extra. Estimates from published rates.

Four or five nights on the water: a Lower Zambezi canoe safari

Canoeing is what this park does that almost no other does, and a canoe-led itinerary is a different trip from a lodge stay with a paddle in it. Tusk & Mane sell a minimum of four nights split between Kutali Camp on Kulefu Island and Chula Island Camp, both near Jeki, with walking and canoeing as the core and no more than ten guests; pay for six and the safari is yours alone. Their scheduled flights to Jeki run from Lusaka, Mfuwe or Livingstone between June and October.

Two other operators run multi-day trips. Kiambi Safari Lodge, at the Kafue confluence, runs its own overnight canoe safaris and can be reached by road. Gwabi River Lodge, at the Chiawa bridge, runs canoe safaris sleeping on the river for up to three nights at budget level. Short canoe trips of two to three hours are on the activity list at most river camps, and the sheltered Chifungulu Channel at Sausage Tree Camp is the gentlest water.

  1. Day 1Proflight to Jeki, transfer to Kutali Camp. Afternoon canoe briefing and a first short paddle.
  2. Day 2Canoeing and walking around Kulefu Island, with boat and vehicle outings in between.
  3. Day 3Paddle on downstream to Chula Island Camp; the guides set the route by the water level and the hippo pods.
  4. Day 4Canoe trip at first light and a walk on the island.
  5. Day 5Back to Jeki and fly out after four nights, or add a night at Tafara Springs at the escarpment foot.

Rough cost: Tusk & Mane were about $700 per person per night all inclusive on a 2022 figure, so about $2,800 for four nights, but no current rate is published; ask them. An agent listing for Kiambi prices two lodge nights plus three nights of canoe camping at $891 per person sharing (checked September 2026, unverified). Add $20 per person a day in park canoeing fees where not included, and flights.

Combination route: South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi

Zambia's classic two-park circuit, and the one that works best, because the parks do different things: South Luangwa is walking and night drives on land, the Lower Zambezi is canoes, boats and elephant on the river. From 1 June to 31 October Proflight P0 621 leaves Mfuwe daily at 10:45 and lands at Jeki at 12:15 and Royal at 12:40, so you never backtrack through Lusaka. In May and from 1 to 15 November the same trip connects via Lusaka. The full comparison is on our compare page and on southluangwapark.com.

  1. Day 1Proflight Lusaka to Mfuwe, about 1 hour 10 minutes. Four nights at a South Luangwa camp.
  2. Days 2 to 4Walking safaris, day drives and night drives in the Luangwa valley.
  3. Day 5Morning activity, then the 10:45 from Mfuwe to Jeki or Royal. Three nights at Royal Zambezi Lodge or an in-park camp such as Sausage Tree Camp.
  4. Days 6 and 7Canoeing, boat cruises and drives on the Zambezi.
  5. Day 8Shuttle to Lusaka, 35 to 60 minutes, for the flight home.

Rough cost per person sharing: about $4,590 to $5,890 for camps and park fees, based on the estimate on our South Luangwa guide of four nights at Nkwali Camp ($535 to $755) and three at Royal Zambezi Lodge from $675, with fees and levies. Flights extra: Proflight shows Lusaka to Mfuwe returns from $373, and a valley portal quotes about $824 return for the Mfuwe to Lower Zambezi leg.

Combination route: Mana Pools and Lower Zambezi, both banks of the river

Mana Pools is directly across the Zambezi in Zimbabwe, and a week split between the two banks gives you Mana's walking, night drives from camps such as Ruckomechi, and the Zambian side's boat cruises and canoe days inside the national park. The link is the Chirundu one-stop border post. No operator publishes a boat transfer between Mana Pools and the Lower Zambezi, and motorboats are banned inside Mana Pools, so the crossing itself is by light aircraft charter or by road via Chirundu; from there it is immigration and a road or boat transfer to your Zambian camp. That routing comes from traveller reports rather than a timetable, so confirm it with whoever meets you on each bank. There is no scheduled transfer between Kariba and the Lower Zambezi.

The nearest Zambian lodges to Chirundu are in the GMA, which keeps the transfer short. From Gwabi River Lodge, a lodge boat reaches Royal Zambezi Lodge in about an hour and three quarters. Our sister guide visitmanapools.com covers the Zimbabwean half.

  1. Day 1Fly from Harare to Mana Pools on a charter your camp arranges. Four nights at a Mana camp.
  2. Days 2 to 4Walking, canoeing and drives on the Mana floodplain.
  3. Day 5Transfer to Chirundu by charter flight or road, clear both border posts, then on to the Chiawa GMA by road or by boat from Gwabi. Three nights at Time + Tide Chongwe Camp or Royal Zambezi Lodge.
  4. Days 6 and 7Night drives, canoeing and boat cruises in Lower Zambezi National Park.
  5. Day 8Proflight from Royal or Jeki to Lusaka, about 35 to 60 minutes, for the flight home.

Rough cost, 2027: about $7,200 to $9,600 per person sharing, based on the estimate on our Mana Pools guide of four nights at Wilderness Ruckomechi ($1,119 to $1,583, park fees included) and three at Time + Tide Chongwe Camp ($810 to $990 plus $100 a night in park fees). Charters, the border transfer and visas are extra.

Combination route: Victoria Falls and Lower Zambezi

There is no direct flight, but Proflight sells Livingstone to the Lower Zambezi as one booking with a change in Lusaka, with departures from Livingstone at 08:40 and 12:20 reaching the valley at 14:35 or 15:35 depending on the season (Proflight, checked 25 October 2026). Proflight flies to Livingstone, not to Victoria Falls airport in Zimbabwe, so if you stay on the Zimbabwe side, cross to Livingstone first. Lusaka to Livingstone on its own is a 1 hour 10 minute flight.

  1. Days 1 and 2Livingstone and Victoria Falls, two nights.
  2. Day 3Proflight from Livingstone via Lusaka to Jeki or Royal, arriving mid-afternoon. Three nights at a GMA lodge or an in-park camp such as Potato Bush Camp.
  3. Days 4 and 5Canoeing, boat cruises, game drives and night drives.
  4. Day 6Shuttle to Lusaka, about 35 minutes from Jeki, for the international flight, or back to Livingstone via Lusaka.

Rough cost per person sharing, 2026: about $2,730 to $3,270 for three nights at Time + Tide Chongwe Camp including $100 a day in park fees, or about $2,925 to $4,290 at Potato Bush Camp before its park fees. Livingstone hotels and flights are extra; Proflight shows Lusaka to Livingstone returns from $426.

Which kind of camp fits each leg

Arrival and departure nights suit a GMA lodge near Royal airstrip or the Chongwe, such as Royal Zambezi Lodge or Chongwe Camp, because transfers are short and you pay park fees only on the days you use the park. Mvuu Lodge does the same job for self-drivers.

The middle of a trip belongs inside the park, where the big game is on the doorstep and night drives start from camp: Chiawa Camp or Old Mondoro in the west, Sausage Tree Camp or Potato Bush Camp in the centre, Anabezi in the quiet east. For a canoe-led trip, the Tusk & Mane island camps are the only ones built around paddling camp to camp. Our where to stay page sorts all of them by area and budget.

When to go and how to book an itinerary

June to October is the window for every route here. September is the best month for canoeing, on the lowest water of the year; October is the best for game viewing, with average highs around 36°C. The Mfuwe to Jeki flight only runs 1 June to 31 October, and nothing is scheduled after 15 November. June and July mornings are cold on the water. Our best time to visit page has the month-by-month detail.

A single lodge is easy to book direct. Once a trip has two camps, a Proflight connection or a border crossing, a specialist who books the whole chain is worth it, because the camps, the shuttle and the transfers all have to line up. We do not take bookings ourselves. A booking request sent through this site goes to a safari specialist we work with, who may pay us a commission.
