Month by month
Lower Zambezi in January
January is the wettest month in the Lower Zambezi's thirty-year record, 352 mm over 20 rain days, and the valley answers it the only way it can: the park stays open on paper while nearly every bed inside it goes dark.
If you only want the answer
You can enter Lower Zambezi National Park in January, but almost nowhere inside it will take you. The trip that exists is a river and birding stay at the handful of year-round lodges outside the boundary, plus Lolebezi from 6 January.
Open park, empty camp register
DNPW never gazettes a seasonal closure here, and the gate will sell you a permit in any month of the year. What ends the season is the camp economy: the in-park lodges shut between mid-November and December, Proflight's last flight of the season left on 15 November, and the valley roads spend the rains failing one culvert at a time.
The exceptions cluster outside the boundary, where the Chiawa game management area keeps road access through the wet months. Royal Zambezi, Mvuu, Kiambi, Gwabi, Breezes and Muchichili all trade through the rains, and Lolebezi, the one near-year-round address inside the park, starts its 2026 season on 6 January.
January weather: what 352 mm actually buys you
Days hold 28.5°C, nights stay at 21.5°C, the air is heavy, and the bush stands tall enough to hide most of the game, which has in any case dispersed away from the river now that water lies everywhere. Nobody should book January expecting mammals.
The compensation is genuine: migrant birds at their annual best against a fully green backdrop, newborn antelope in the thickets, a swollen Zambezi that turns every outing into a boat safari, and the lowest rates on the calendar.
The January rules for anglers and planners
Leave the rods at home. This stretch of river is legally closed to all fishing from 1 December to the end of February under the Fisheries Act, whatever an optimistic booking site may tell you.
January is also the month to commit to the coming dry season. The small camps sell their August and September beds close to a year out, so a request placed now is already competing with everyone who booked before the holidays.
