Month by month
Lower Zambezi in December
December closes the Lower Zambezi's year on the rains' terms: 268 mm across 18 storm days, a fishing ban that starts on 1 December, and the last in-park season, Lolebezi's, ending on 19 December.
If you only want the answer
By the third week of December the valley is down to its year-round lodges outside the park. What remains is a green-season river trip: superb birding, newborn animals and the cheapest beds of the year at the properties that stay lit.
The last lights go out
Lolebezi trades deeper into the rains than any other address inside the boundary, through 19 December on its published 2026 calendar. After that, the in-park camp economy is fully offline until it restarts in the new year.
Royal Zambezi and the game management area stalwarts, Mvuu, Kiambi, Gwabi, Breezes and Muchichili, carry the valley through the wet, road conditions permitting.
December weather: green season, honestly described
Storms build most afternoons, days hold 29.1°C under thick humidity, and the game scatters into cover no vehicle can read. The river becomes the viewing platform, not the road network.
For birders this is a reward month rather than a consolation: the migrants are all in, the riverine thickets hold the season's most wanted skulkers, and African pitta is the December prize.
Rules and forward planning
The Fisheries Act shuts this frontage to all fishing from 1 December, a legal closure that outlasts the holidays and runs to the end of February.
Use the downtime for next year's arithmetic: the coming dry season's scarce weeks are already selling, and the valley's smallest camps will not wait around for January.
