Month by month
Lower Zambezi in February
February on this river is January with the volume turned down one notch. It is still green season and still thunderstorm country, but the thirty-year normals ease from 352 mm of rain to 278, and from 20 wet days to 17.
If you only want the answer
Treat February exactly like January, a boat-and-birds month run from the year-round lodges, with a single meaningful difference in the numbers: measurably less rain falls. It is the best-value full month of the Lower Zambezi year.
The same shutdown, one shade lighter
Everything that closed the valley in December stays closed now. No scheduled flights operate, the in-park camps sit behind flooded tracks, and the trade that continues runs from the Chiawa game management area and the Chirundu gateway.
Lolebezi is the outlier inside the boundary, already a month into its season by now, and Royal Zambezi anchors the park-side properties that never stop at all.
February weather: storms, not monsoon, say the thirty year average
The normals give 27.5°C days, 21.4°C nights and 17 rain days, which on the ground means towering afternoon build-ups more often than day-long soakings. Mornings on the water are frequently clear and spectacular.
The birding holds everything the earlier rains offered, the canoeing on a full river is quietly rewarding for the few who try it, and the rates are as low as this valley ever goes.
One date to watch: 1 March
The fishing ban that began on 1 December runs to the end of February, so anglers here late in the month are waiting out a legal closure rather than a weather one. The water reopens on 1 March.
If your real target is the dry season, be aware that February requests for August already land in thin inventory, and September inventory is usually thinner still.
