Month by month

Lower Zambezi in May

May completes the Lower Zambezi roster. Chiawa opened around 30 April, Old Mondoro follows on about 1 May, the Tusk & Mane fly-camps begin their season, and Proflight's first flight of the year lands on 1 May.

If you only want the answer

May is April with the access problem solved: similar shoulder rates and quiet riverbanks, but with scheduled flights running and the last camps open. Walking safaris also resume this month as the ground firms.

What separates May from April

The two months share a character, green edges, gentle pricing, few vehicles, and differ on one axis: getting in. From 1 May you fly from Lusaka in around half an hour instead of driving the escarpment road and boating the last stretch.

The final holdouts open now too, which means every style of stay in the valley, from Chiawa's river frontage to a Tusk & Mane island fly-camp, is bookable at once for the first time since mid-November.

May weather: the valley drying into shape

Rain effectively ends at 6 mm on the thirty-year average, days ease to 26.6°C and nights drop to 17.2°C. The bush begins to thin, and the first real drift of game toward the river starts showing up on drives.

Walking resumes as the floodplain hardens, always with a qualified guide and an armed DNPW escort, and the cool air makes these some of the most comfortable walking weeks of the season.

The quiet buy

May is the value month of the good season: conditions one notch below prime, prices one notch below peak, and camps that still hold space at reasonably short notice.

Pack for two climates, because a dawn boat run at 17°C and a mid-afternoon drive under full sun are different outfits entirely.
